The Leeward Islands are home to over three hundred hectares, most of the French Polynesia vanilla plantations.

From 2003 to 2009, through the government program to support the installation of farms under shade house, 284 new farms have been set up on an area of about 20 hectares, mainly in the Leeward Islands ( 18 hectares).

It should be noted that all shade structures installed on the same dates do not occur in the same way and in equal times from one island to another. The production of a vanillère course depends on the technicality of the farmer of the location and especially the regularity of maintenance of compost and ombrière overall consolidated technical supervision and monitoring health of the sector covered by the Establishment Tahitian Vanilla.

This is in Tahaa, the "Vanilla Island" that there are as many farms vanilla from Tahiti

The exploitation of vanilla on living stakes

single image
With the establishment of the installer of farms under shade house in 2003, most producers 'traditional' have acquired a shade structure while retaining their vanillère on live stakes awaiting a start producing their shade house.

Today, we see that the production of Tahitian Vanilla comes mainly from farms under shade structures with reduced production plots of Vanilla from Tahiti cultured on living guardian, certainly related to the aging of vanilla and abandonment of this mode of culture.

Production on live stakes increased from 47 tonnes in 2005 to 21 tons in 2009.

Evolution of the number of active producers

Despite the significant increase in the production of Tahitian Vanilla, identification of active producers harvested and sold their production of mature traditional vanilla shows a steady decline from one year to another:

  • 1163 producers in 2003
  • 716 producers in 2009.
