Major step forward for the Tahitian Vanilla breeding programme

Major step forward for the Tahitian Vanilla breeding programme
After six years of growing, for the first time, an hybrid issued from the cross between Vanilla ×tahitensis and Vanilla pompona has blossomed. Pollen of V. pompona was put on a Vanilla ×tahitensis flower on 2004, nine months later the ripe bean was harvested and one of its seeds sowed (2005).
Hybrids between Vanilla ×tahitensis and Vanilla pompona are part of the Tahitian Vanilla breeding programme for important traits (low susceptibility to diseases, high aromatic quality) set up by Etablissement Vanille de Tahiti. Vanilla pompona (vanillon) formerly cultivated in the West Indies, is less susceptible to Fusarium and Cymbidium Mosaic Virus and therefore has been used as parent in order to give the Tahitian vanilla plant its interesting characteristics.

Flowers of this hybrid are larger than those of the cultivated Vanilla ×tahitensis: Tahiti and Haapape, and look like the flowers of the two parents. Some months wait is still required to evaluate the bean from marriage of this flower and its aromas. A new backcross of this hybrid to Vanilla ×tahitensis may be required to obtain new hybrid producing beans with the same aromas as those of the Tahitian vanilla beans.
This flowering is promising, on the one hand it confirms that hybridization between Vanilla species is possible and on the other hand that the juvenile period of the vanilla plant does not exceed the period expected (7 years, similar to some citrus fruit).
